Art by NW: Eduardo Fausti’s prints reflect the energy of Orcas Island

Channeling forest hikes, lake walks and the starry night sky, the Argentinian artist makes an impression with monotypes and mezzotints.

REFLECTIONS ON SOUND II

“Reflections on Sound II continues Argentine-born American artist Eduardo Fausti’s evocative series of monotypes — abstract, intuitive meditations on nature. An established printmaker, Fausti moved from New York City to Orcas Island in the San Juan Islands in 2015, becoming bi-coastal. He finds inspiration for his work on long walks, reflecting on the sounds and sights of the islands.”

Harris Harvey Gallery, Seattle, Wa, October 3 - November 2, 2024. Artist’s Reception: First Thursday, October 3, 6-8 PM.

FIRMAMENTO

Such a pleasure to return to beloved Florence for this solo exhibition of mezzotints and drypoints dedicated to the memory of Galileo Galilei. The show includes images from the astronomer’s life as well as depictions of Jupiter and its moons, Saturn, and the solar spots he empirically discovered. Continuing the tradition of studying the heavens, I extended the imagery to include contemporary satellites and telescopes while also exploring the early understanding of the heliocentric system with portraits of the Greek scientist and philosopher Aristarchus of Samos, scientist Nicolaus Copernicus and Galileo, himself. The exhibition emphasizes Galileo’s revolutionary notion that human beings are not at the center of the universe, and highlights how the search for and wonder at the heavens have been constant companions of humanity since antiquity.

The exhibition is hosted at the Art Gallery of Fondazione Il Bisonte, an international school and institution dedicated to the teaching and dissemination of printmaking since its founding in 1959. I am deeply grateful to the Foundation’s Director Simone Guaita for his generosity, and to the Foundation’s Curator, Silvia Bellotti, for her dedication in assembling such an impeccable show. A printed catalog accompanies the exhibition, featuring an essay by Ms. Bellotti and SACI Professor Emeritus Gary Lissa.

THE BRODSKY CENTER AT RUTGERS UNIVERSITY, THREE DECADES 1986-2017

It’s an honor to be part of this historic exhibition at the Zimmerli Art Museum, Rutgers University (New Brunswick, New Jersey), celebrating the legacy of visionary founder Judith Brodsky — my teacher and mentor. I’m humbled to be included in this survey of prints among hundreds of works created by artist printmakers and master printers at the Center over the past three decades.

In the picture above, I’m shown at the Center signing 350 woodcuts, produced after being selected by the Academy of Medicine of New Jersey to create a limited edition of prints for their Annual Meeting. As the subject for this edition, I chose to portray the poet and physician from Rutherford, New Jersey — William Carlos Williams.

This unprecedented exhibition, curated by Distinguished Professor Emerita Ferris Olin (Rutgers University), is accompanied by a four-color catalogue featuring reproductions of all works in the show, published for the occasion.

REFLECTIONS ON SOUND

Since I moved my printmaking studio to Orcas Island, I was able to perceive more delicate sounds of trickling water in barely detectable creeks, the sounds of barely visible small song birds, the sounds of swaying Douglas firs, the wind as it rustles through our island habitat and much more. At the same time I was moved by the views of bodies of water including our island’s East and West Sounds after which both are named. This lies behind my choosing the title Reflections on Sound, which embraces many feelings and sensations. I’m thrilled to show ten monotypes of this recent series at Harris Harvey Gallery, one of the leading galleries of Seattle representing artist from the Pacific North West since 1984.

Harris Harvey Gallery, Seattle, WA, October 6-29, 2022. Artist’s Reception: First Thursday, October 6, 6-8 PM.
