Since my early youth I’ve been fascinated by the night sky. In this series of mezzotints, I examine the granulated textures through images of heavenly bodies with starry dark skies as backgrounds. Many of these images are familiar to us over the last decades thanks to continued discoveries made by new and improved telescopes. Rendering them in mezzotint and devoid of color give them a quality different from a scientific inquiry. I’m able to personalize my emotional response to the subject and explore a more naked interpretation of universal beauty devoid of most cultural or historical conventions.

FIRMAMENT

In a deep, dark and azure sky
dotted with a sea of lights
I see embroidered in northern latitudes
eternal constellations of princesses,
brave heroes and celestial kings

From the timeless fading of a trillion stars
I sail to an unmeasured destiny
of mythical creatures and Hellenic Gods,
they set their boundaries at an early age
and divided the great moving vault
in kaleidoscopic asymmetric parts

I look towards the heavenly bodies again
and find beautiful Cassiopeia;
her tears watering the ethereal dome
unveiling primordial geometric forms

Directing my gaze to further luster
the ephemeral dance vanishes from my view
only to reveal the most distant stars
still dormant in the cold winter night;
they are the shimmering seeds
in the silent and immense sky
that complete my arc of sight

Oh my, oh my… how fulfilled am I
when the Firmament meets my eyes
and the splendor of its glory
makes me whole, makes me one
